BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Almakio Phiri is a seasoned professional in public health, leadership, governance, and change management, with over 20 years of impactful experience advancing health systems across Eastern and Southern Africa. He holds a Master of Science in Corporate Governance from Leeds Beckett University, a Master of Science in Leadership and Change Management from Leeds Metropolitan University, and a Master of Philosophy in HIV/AIDS Management from Stellenbosch University. His medical qualifications include a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from the University of Zambia, as well as a Diploma in HIV Management from the College of Family Physicians of South Africa. His multidisciplinary expertise places him at the forefront of public health, leadership development, and institutional transformation. Dr. Phiri’s work focuses on addressing critical health challenges in leadership, governance, and change management, including HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, COVID-19, and RMNCH, while advancing health security and system resilience. He has led high-impact initiatives with global partners, including the Africa CDC, USAID, PEPFAR, US CDC, DFID, DOD, PMI, and the Global Fund, delivering measurable and sustainable results. Dr. Phiri is the founder and director of ALTA Consultancy. He currently serves as a Learning, Monitoring, and Evaluation Associate at the Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD), where he supports the establishment of a new Department of Public Health in Guinea-Bissau, contributes to research and policy development, and works with strategic partners to promote equitable health outcomes. Previously, he led the Ministerial Executive Leadership Programme (MELP) at Africa CDC, providing strategic leadership and capacity-building to health ministers across the continent. He has also held senior leadership roles at international organisations such as Management Sciences for Health (MSH) and Population Services International (PSI), where he led programs in health governance, workforce development, health information systems, service delivery, financing, and supply chain management. A master facilitator, Dr. Phiri is highly skilled in clinical training, instructional design, facilitation, coaching, mentorship, and supportive supervision. He has designed and delivered transformative leadership development initiatives that strengthen leadership capacity at all levels, supporting institutions as they navigate change in complex environments. His extensive regional footprint includes Botswana, Ethiopia, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, South Sudan, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, where his leadership has driven public health progress and policy reform across diverse contexts.
