Dr Faustine Engelbert Ndugulile Elected as WHO Regional Director for Africa

Dr Faustine Engelbert Ndugulile has been elected as the next Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Africa, succeeding Dr. Matshidiso Moeti. This significant achievement was confirmed during the Seventy-fourth session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa held in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, where Dr Ndugulile garnered 25 out of 46 votes, emerging as the preferred candidate among several notable contenders.

Dr. Ndugulile, a seasoned medical professional and public health expert, expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him by the African Member States. He stated, “I’m truly honoured and humbled to be elected to the position of WHO Regional Director for Africa. I promise to work with you, and I believe that together we can build a healthier Africa.” His priorities include enhancing health systems, improving maternal and child health, and strengthening health security across the continent.

Dr. Faustine Ndugulile is a prominent medical expert, public health specialist, and politician with over 20 years of experience. His career showcases extensive expertise in technical, policy, and political domains. He has served in key positions such as a technocrat in Tanzania's Ministry of Health, Member of Parliament, Deputy Minister of Health, and Minister for Communication and Information Technology. 

Dr Ndugulile's global health experience, excellent communication abilities, diplomatic skills and dedication will be needed to make a lasting positive impact on public health and ensure a healthier future for all in Africa.

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus congratulated Dr Ndugulile, recognizing the confidence that the Member States have placed in him. As he prepares to take on this vital role, Dr. Ndugulile's extensive experience and commitment to public health promise a transformative impact on the health landscape of Africa.
