The Institute for Global Health and Development is co-hosting an important webinar in collaboration with RDP África and the Women in Global Health (WGH) Lusophone Community. This timely event, titled "The Advances and Setbacks of Gender Equality in Africa," will provide a comprehensive analysis of the current state of gender equality across the African continent.
The webinar aims to explore the progress made towards gender equality in Africa, while also addressing the persistent challenges and recent setbacks. Participants can expect a nuanced discussion on various aspects of gender equality, including women's political participation, economic empowerment, access to education and healthcare, and the fight against gender-based violence.
Panellists:
- Mónica Ferro, Portuguese, Director of the UNFPA Office in the United Kingdom
- Marisa Carvalho, Cape-Verdian, President of the Institute for Gender Equality and Equity of Cape Verde
- Maimuna Sila, Bissau-Guinean, former President of the Institute of Women and Children of Guinea-Bissau
- Eva Pascoal, Mozambican, from the WHO Guinea-Bissau Office
The expert panellists will share insights on successful initiatives that have advanced women's rights and gender equality in different African countries. They will also examine the obstacles that continue to hinder progress, such as cultural barriers, discriminatory laws, and the impact of recent global crises on gender equality efforts.
The debate, moderated by journalist Paula Borges, will be broadcast at 6 pm (Lisbon Time) on the RDP-África and WGHLC Facebook pages and, on August 2nd, on RDP-África, after 5 pm (Lisbon Time).
This event offers a valuable opportunity for policymakers, researchers, activists, and anyone interested in African development to gain a deeper understanding of the complex landscape of gender equality in Africa.
By bringing together diverse perspectives from across the Lusophone community and beyond, this webinar promises to be an enlightening and thought-provoking discussion on one of the most critical issues facing Africa today.
