Africa's Women's Day: Celebrating the Strength and Resilience of African Women

Every year on July 31st, Africa celebrates Women's Day, a significant occasion that honours the contributions, achievements, and aspirations of African women across the continent and beyond. This day, also known as Pan-African Women's Day, has been commemorated since 1962 when it was first established in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

The origins of this day are deeply rooted in the struggle for Africa's liberation from colonialism and the fight against apartheid. It marks the founding of the Pan African Women's Organisation (PAWO), Africa's first and oldest collective women's organization. PAWO has played a crucial role in advocating for women's rights, gender equality, and the abolishment of discriminatory practices against African women.

Africa's Women's Day serves as a powerful reminder of the significant role African women have played in shaping a strong Pan-African identity. It highlights their shared values, objectives, and vision for the future, while also recognizing women as key contributors to Africa's inclusive growth and sustainable development.

This day is not just about celebration; it's also a call to action. It encourages reflection on the progress made in advancing women's rights and gender equality across the continent. At the same time, it draws attention to the challenges that persist, such as violence against women, food insecurity, and the need for greater economic empowerment.

As we commemorate Africa's Women's Day, it's important to recognize the diverse contributions of women in all spheres of life – from grassroots movements to leadership positions in politics, business, and civil society. It's a day to celebrate the resilience, strength, and ingenuity of African women who continue to break barriers and pave the way for future generations.

Let us use this day to reaffirm our commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment. By supporting and uplifting African women, we contribute to building a more prosperous, peaceful, and equitable continent for all.
